Description

seven Marine 557 for sale

Rated at 557 ponies, 59 percent more power than its closest rival, Seven Marine’s 557 is the world’s most powerful outboard. This brute is based on a supercharged, 6.2-liter, aluminum Cadillac LSA V-8. It’s the only outboard with a closed cooling system, a key anti-corrosion feature.

The horizontal powerhead turns the drivetrain 90 degrees through a ZF Marine electronic transmission, a derivative of the gearbox used in ZFs pod drives. The 557 can be had with gear ratios ranging from 1.4:1 to 2.1:1.

The beefy, twin-pinion lower unit accommodates propellers up to 18 inches in diameter, ensuring delivery of the engine’s 550 foot-pounds of torque. The 557 also features dual exhaust outlets; at low speeds, exhaust gases exit through ports above water. As speed increases, this transitions to a through-hub exhaust. There are also dual water inlets. The 557’s 150-amp alternator surpasses the output of any other outboard. Integral power-assist steering, co-developed with Latham Marine, helps rein in the torque. The 1,045-pound 557 weighs 282 pounds more than Yamaha’s 763-pound F350 V-8. The 557’s power-to-weight ratio is 0.53 — 15 percent more than that of Yamaha’s and equivalent to Mercury Racing’s Verado 350 SCi. It’s 7 percent lower than that of Evinrude’s E-TEC 300.

Trend Up

“We started seeing the big center console offshore and go-fast boats with triples and quad outboards,” says Brian Davis, vice president of Seven Marine. “We also saw the lunatic fringe with five outboards strapped to the back and realized the market is clearly asking for more power. With a pair of our 557s, you’ll be decreasing the drag, decreasing overall weight and increasing power over triples. The efficiency will be better too. Our projections show a fuel rate of 11.6 gallons per hour per engine with a boat cruising at 3,200 to 3,400 rpm at 45 miles per hour. We also anticipate a top speed into the mid-70s with a 37-foot boat. This proven block and unique engineering will be able to deliver all that power to the water.”

The 557 is based on General Motors’ Cadillac CTS-V aluminum block engine. This compact power plant has millions of dollars of research and development behind it and a proven marine track record in sterndrive and inboard applications. The 557 outboard block is mounted horizontally and uses a ZF transmission in the midsection for shifting. Seven Marine designed the twin-pinion gear case to transfer the energy into the water. But that’s not the only engineering collaboration tied to this project.

Brief Summary

Over two years ago a group of engineers in Wisconsin announced that they were making a 557-hp outboard engine. Prototypes were displayed in February 2011 at the Miami Boat Show. The following Fort Lauderdale show, two operating engines were shown on a 37’ Intrepid, and then engines were demonstrated at subsequent shows with a single on a 30’ Sea Hunter, and twins on a 38’ Fountain. And now, this week at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show, no fewer than six boats – 4 with twins, 2 with triples – will be at the dock ready for public scrutiny powered by Seven Marine 557-hp engines. The new Seven Marine 557 is the most powerful outboard engine on the planet.
